Add and Provision a Computer Running Windows

Adding a computer to LiveVault involves a few simple steps:

  1. Downloading and installing the service software onto the computer.

  2. Configuring the software on the computer.

  3. Setting up your initial backup policies.

Note: If you want to access information that may help you with mass deployment / installation scenarios, follow Additional installation information link.

To add a Windows computer

  1. Ensure the computer meets the LiveVault system requirements.

  2. In LiveVault Web Portal, select Downloads from the top menu bar.

  3. Select the type of kit you need and click Download:

    • Agent for Windows Server

    • Agent for Windows Server x64

    • HP StoreEasy

Note: You cannot install the 64-bit agent on a 32-bit machine. Likewise, you cannot install the 32-bit agents on a 64-bit machine.
  4. Click Run to continue the installation process now, or click Save to save the software to a specified location. You can then begin the installation process later by starting the executable you downloaded.

  5. When the installation begins, accept the license agreement, and click Next.

  6. Choose the installation location for the software.

Click Change to change the destination for the software and for the backup database files.

The installation defaults to the volume with the most free space as the location for the backup database files, as follows:

    <x:\>\LiveVaultdata

where x:\ is the volume letter.

Note: LiveVault recommends you to select a location other than your root drive for the backup database files. The backup database files can grow to consume a lot of space, depending on the number of backup policies you create and the amount of data you are backing up. The volume for the LiveVault data directory should optimally have at least 5 GB free disk space.

LiveVault recommends you install the data directory to a NTFS or ReFS formatted volume on Windows Server 2012.

Important: Do not select a Windows volume optimized for data deduplication for the location of the data directory.

If you are installing the agent on a Microsoft Exchange CCR node, see the topics Backing up Microsoft Exchange servers in a CCR configuration and Restoring Microsoft Exchange servers in a CCR configuration for information you should consider.

  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Install to install the software.

  9. Click Configure to continue.

    The Configuration Wizard opens.

Provision the New Computer

You use the Configuration Wizard to generate an encryption key and provision the computer to the LiveVault service.

To test the connection to the LiveVault service

  1. On the Configuration Wizard login page, click Configuration.

  2. Click the Test button.

Important: Do NOT change the provisioning URL.
  3. If the test is successful, click OK to return to the login page.

If the test fails, you must fix the problem before you can complete the provisioning. Typical causes for failure are firewalls and proxy servers.

  1. In the Username box, type the user name.

  2. In the Password box, type the password for the user account.

  3. Click Next.

    The Installation page opens.

Select one of the options for installation:

    • For a new computer, select New server being added to the backup service.

    • To reprovision an existing system, select Reprovision a previously registered system. Select the system name from the Select system list.

    • For a disaster recovery, select Recovering a complete system. Select the system name from the Select system list.

  4. Click Next.

The LiveVault agent generates an encryption key. This process may take up to several minutes due to the random nature of cryptographic key generation.

The Configuration page opens. This page allows users to select to configure the agent for standard backup or as a CIFS-only agent.

  5. Select Create a standard backup agent.

  6. Click Next.

  7. You must enter an encryption key password for this computer. Enter and confirm your encryption key password.

Important: It is critical that you remember this password. You need this password for disaster recovery, to redirect your data to a different location during restore jobs, and other processes.
  8. Select the Send Encrypted Password option if you want to store a copy of your password with the service. You can then retrieve the password at a later time if you forget your password.

  9. Click Next.

  10. Click Finish to finish configuring the software.

  11. You must restart your computer before you can start backing up data.

  12. When you restart, follow the instructions in Configuring a New Computer to begin backup for this computer.
